[quote]But this is really odd. The link is http but yet if you try to go to it its converted to https without you doing anything. All my browsers do that.

hmm...there is something funky in their website.

There's nothing odd or funky about that -- the remote system is redirecting the http port to the https port.

What remote system?
If I say here to make it http and the project is also http, then why is it turning into https?
If things don't work here, then why via BOINC is it appearing to be the same issue?
Is there something here on the local system that got changed during an windows update or what happened?

The remote system is whatever system you are trying to connect to, in this instance Cosmology@Home. What is going on here has nothing to do with how your computer is set up, nor any application configuration on your computer. The change from http to https is being done by C@H's firewall.
Every decent firewall is capable of forwarding any given port to any other port. Think in terms of moving to a new place of residence, and instructing the post office to forward your mail from the old address to the new one. Port forwarding works in much the same way: In this instance, the C@H firewall is set up to send http traffic to the https port number (port 80 is redirected to port 8080, to be more specific). Not only can a firewall do this much, but it can also send http traffic to the https port on a completely different computer.
This is nothing you have any control over, and it does not matter if you are using Boinc or your web browser to make the connection.
As for the reason for the error, C@H's security certificate is expired, and so the issuing authority will no longer authenticate it. Because of this, your browser is refusing to load that page. Once upon a time, Firefox gave you a chance to accept the certificate anyway, and proceed at your own caution -- apparently no longer, but if there is a way to change Firefox's config back to the way it worked before, I haven't yet found it.

http://www.cosmologyathome.org/create_account_form.php

That is what the page shows, but when you click on the link then it goes to this:
https://www.cosmologyathome.org//create_account_form.php?next_url=

http://www.cosmologyathome.org/login_form.php
and that converts to https://www.cosmologyathome.org//login_form.php?next_url=

http://www.cosmologyathome.org/home.php
https://www.cosmologyathome.org//login_form.php?next_url=home.php

I am just copying what is in the url bar. Nothing is altered.

And I have told you what is happening at C@H -- the firewall is taking traffic addressed to the http port and sending it instead to the https port.
Why is this happening? Because C@H wants to ensure that your communication is secure while you are creating a new account or logging in on an existing account.

Ok...but their SSL is all messed up.
Or is there something on my end to correct SSL errors?
And I missed your info in all the other chatter.

That I don't know. HTTPS mode is not enabled in firefox.

It is enabled in mine. When I select "Account" it takes me here:

https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/home.php

And the page I am typing this on is:

https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_reply.php?thread=6893&post=107425&no_quote=1#input

I am running firefox-102.3.0-6.el8_6.x86_64 that is the latest Firefox ESL release for my OS distribution:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 8.6 (Ootpa)
I didn't realise there's a "mode" for it. Surely your browser should go where you ask? If you type http it should not use the secure system. If you type https it will do so.

Anyway, the problem is not here, which is fully on https. It's with cosmology, which doesn't use it, but it appears his browser is trying to use what the server cannot.

Your missing what I said last night.
The main page and all other pages except for login and sign up work fine.
Well also Your Account page.

Basically anything that requires you to login goes bad.
I think the login pages are https and will not allow http?
Ah, I see. And oh shit. To test, I logged out (my browser had been left logged in for months). So I clicked log out, then log in. The log in link is only http, but it redirects (presumably at the server's request) to https. That page then gives "ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED" which is presumably a server misconfiguration. It insists on using a protocol they haven't yet set up?

Excellent explanation, that clears a lot of things up.

But I've had certificate expired messages in Opera before, and they clearly state there's a certificate problem. Now I'm just getting

This site can’t be reached
www.cosmologyathome.org unexpectedly closed the connection.
ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED
With no mention of a certificate. So does that mean the rejection of the expired certificate is not done by my browser in this case, but by something in Cosmology at Home's servers or firewall?

I just attached to Cosmology@Home with my Android (yes I know they don't have Android tasks, I was testing the connection). It connected fine, to "http://www.cosmologyathome.org/"

How come it wasn't redirected when it tried to log in?

Somebody needs to contact them. Anyone got a live contact?

All my computers are still connected with Boinc, and I can turn things off and on in Boinc, I just can't to the website to change settings any more. So I can probably still do work for them ok as I've got most stuff in that project set up perfectly here.

I THINK I was able to find a live contact and report it.

Let's watch over the next few days to see if this worked.

Thanks, hopefully you found someone, because there was no reply to the below link. Strange they don't already know though, unless the server is almost never looked at. If they see jobs coming through (from those of us already logged in) they might not realise.

People have been trying for some time to contact the project head, Marius Millea, for some time. The biggest problem seems to be that he is no longer at Illinois (I believe he's now at the Poincaré Institute), and has stopped maintaining the C@H site.

Is it that the `public` that have never run a BOINC project can use http to read the forums , read only .
Any account login needs https to protect username/password being stolen , read - write .
The BOINC client behind boinc manager uses its own ftp to fetch and upload work wether logged in or not , web browser running or not .
Or am I barking up the wrong tree .

Never been to Barking , wonderfull name for a town :-)

And when I posted that lot above all I got was :-

blank screen etc
AND HAD TO TYPE IT ALL OVER AGAIN . . . nNnN nnnn fugnnn stupid interknot screw upsss

It now looks like he did not arrange for anyone else to take over maintaining the C@H site.

If so, it's questionable for anyone to continue participating in that project.

Ben Wandelt was the original creator of cosmology@home years ago and he went `home` to Paris a few years ago ,
not that it matters where his feet are , just call in to the project , heck once a month would be a big improvement

Ah that makes sense, I wondered how Boinc was managing. Although I assume it doesn't use ftp to join the project? I got my phone to join it ok.

Yeah that's happened to me. Anything written with Boinc code screws up every 5 minutes. For example, I have a Primegrid task which has taken 5 days to do 33%. So, can we guess how long the other 67% will take? Boinc says 150 days. How can a programmer be that monumentally stupid?

Some BOINC projects are now using a very high initial estimate for the run time, possibly in order to get an especially high priority for their tasks. GPUGRID is one of them. You need to watch how the estimated time to completion drops in order to see if that happened,
