Message 106149 - Posted: 2 May 2022, 2:42:51 UTC - in response to Message 106145.

Hardly, avx came out at the start of 2011 - very new in terms of computers would be at least the start of 2021.
Snob! I have 7 PCs and only 2 have AVX. Most of my equipment is 2nd hand and an average of 10 years old. I fail to see the point in spending thousands on stuff that goes a few times faster than stuff that's 50 quid.

That should work if you have plenty of space and a very low local price for electricity.

You sound like people who tell me electric cars are cheap to run. Yes, after they've paid you back for the exorbitant price. Or people who buy a new gas boiler to save gas, but they spend a grand getting the boiler. By the time it's paid for itself in gas savings, it's expired. New PC equipment costs a fortune. 2nd hand stuff is very cheap, especially if you buy stuff others don't want, like a GPU with a dodgy display output that still crunches fine. And if you would be heating the house anyway, the electricity is working for you twice.

Not a snob, just trying not to mislead people viewing your post.

Imagine someone with a pc vintage 2019 who doesn’t try Rosetta because the hardware is 2 generations old and you’ve said it will only run on very new hardware.

CUT IT OUT! Save this kind of crap for personal messages. Your clogging up the board with this nitpicking and accusing. Get back to what this thread is about. Problems and technical issues.

GEES!

Depends on your point of view. I call my car new because it has a reg plate from this century. Some people need one from this year to impress the neighbours.

And since you only have 3 computers (ROFL!), one dating from 2013, and your best one is a couple of models below my best one, your total passmark rating is lower than mine, and your GPUs are abysmal since you total 2GB VRAM and I total 26GB, I suggest you STFU about saying my computers are out of date.

Sorry Greg, he started it :-)

It’s nothing to do with point of view, it’s nothing to do with mine’s bigger than yours, it’s all to do with the deliberate misrepresentation of a technical issue - end of.

If you really believe that you're not very bright (but assuming you're Welsh that's not actually your fault). It's to do with how new you consider a new or old computer to be. Which is everything to do with mine's bigger than yours. Your viewpoint that most Boinc users have fancy new computers is false, in fact we're quite likely to collect old stuff more than say someone who plays games.

.... your keyboard? This sentence is incomplete. You'll be saying "bovvered!" next. You're Lauren aren't you?

dumb ass server booted me awhile back and I didn't notice.
no idea what errors I generated this time.

maybe it is time to leave and go search for a real project that doesn't have this kind of stupidiness involved and has no interest in its volunteers.

I'm going on vacation soon, so maybe when I come back I just remove this project.
I can't be monitoring this project all the time to see if I am removed from python or not, I have a life that does not involve me sitting here watching every night to see if I am removed or not.

This project has gone so far downhill I think they just keep it around for the funding.
There is obviously no interest in this project from the team.

I'm gonna try WCG when they get their act together. It seems the problems are them moving to completely different software on completely different servers and trying to transfer all the data and settings across. Having read up on "IBM Mainframes", I'm gonna blame IBM:

https://dfarq.homeip.net/what-does-ibm-do-now/

"Migrating off an IBM mainframe is like building a new airplane while you’re flying on another one and then trying to change planes in flight."

P.S. I love the domain name in that link and how you would pronounce it.

I don't expect WCG to come up alive very soon. I believe that the Krembil Research Insttitute has bitten more than it can chew,

Chances are that they have some. Just not enough of the right kind, or too much else for them to do.

The whole system is offline, what else are they doing, making coffee?

Anyway, they have the money to hire some short term.

As for right kind, WTF? that would be like my garage saying "Sorry mate we only got the mechanics that do brakes today, we can't fit a clutch, they don't know how to do that".

They are engaged in cancer research. As for the right kind, few if any of the IT people know all of the 2000 or so computer languages.

Research by IT guys? So Krembil bought something they don't have the manpower to make work. FFS.

Why would they need to know a computer language? They're just copying from one server to another!

If they were copying to the same model of server, with the same operating system, it would probably be simple.

They probably aren't, so they'll need to make a lot of changes in the programs that run on the server. That requires knowledge of whatever computer languages those programs are written in.

When I copy my photos and Photoshop to a new computer with Windows instead of Linux, I don't have to know how it's written. All they need to do is configure stuff.

At the moment they can't even get the web server to work. What IT guy can't get a web server running?!
