I have set: "Do work while computer is in use?" to "No", but my computer is still working while it is in use. He doesn't accept settings from General preferences. I have intel P945 processor.

Make sure in BOINC Manager that you have "Run based on preferences" selected under the Activity menu item.

While I have set several settings to try to control rosetta from taking over my computer, I seem to have failed.

In general preferences: Do work wile computer is in use: NO
Use at most: 50 percent of processor time

In Boinc manager: "run based on preferences" (and yes I updated)

I have even "Suspended" boic.

Yet Rosetta continues to use upwards of 90% of my processor time (even when suspended)

The only way I seem to be able to get it to stop is to suspend and then end the rosetta task in windows task manager.

Boinc Manager 5.8.16

I'm not sure how to tell which version of rosetta is running.

any thoughts would be appreciated. If I don't fix this soon I'm going to have to detach rosetta. I really do need to do work of my own with this computer on occasion (although my boss may suggest I fail at that).

Mike, I see you have several hosts registered. It could prove helpful if you would identify which one is having this issue (or is it all of them??)

But, often times, when people get that many hosts, they start to use the location specific preferences (home, school, work, default).

Double check that host. Go to the messages tab in the advanced view of the BOINC Manager. Go clear back to the beginning of the messages when BOINC was first starting. You will see messages something like this:

7/2/2007 4:07:14 PM|rosetta@home|URL: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID: xxxxxx; location: work; project prefs: default
7/2/2007 4:07:14 PM|ralph@home|URL: http://ralph.bakerlab.org/; Computer ID: xxx; location: home; project prefs: default
7/2/2007 4:07:14 PM||General prefs: from rosetta@home (last modified 2007-05-29 10:38:41)
7/2/2007 4:07:14 PM||Host location: work
7/2/2007 4:07:14 PM||General prefs: using separate prefs for work

Then double check which location you are setting the CPU usage % for. And that it matches the host you are working with.

Note the mixture of locations identified above between different BOINC projects. But it is that last "General prefs" message that confirms this host will look for the "work" location's general preferences when you do an update.

In the meantime, if BOINC is interfering with your work, just right click the BOINC icon and have it snooze.

It's only one of my computers that seems to be having this problem. It's identified as 335920 mikesm500. I have uninstalled BOINC and reinstalled. Same result.

I changed all my preferences to exactly the same (Default, home, work--- I have never set school preferences, since that's not applicable). I updated via boinc manager.

Still rosetta runs all the time unless I actually terminate the process.

I have been suspending boinc and terminating the rosetta process each morning. And sometimes remembering to turn things back on when I leave at night. But that's a bit annoying.

Perhaps what I need to do is uninstall then make sure all the prefs are gone on the machine before I reinstall.

Does anyone know where all the prefs/setttings/data are stored?

By default, everything is stored with the BOINC application, which on Windows is in Program FilesBOINC

and the general preferences (i.e. those for BOINC, not specific to Rosetta) seem to be in the file
C:Program FilesBOINCglobal_prefs.xml

...did we review the BOINC Manager? Go to the advanced view, and the activity pulldown, and make sure you have the run preference set to "run based on preferences" rather then "run always".
